Static Dissipative Brush

The static dissipative brush is just one of Gordon Brush's ESD brush models. Our ESD and cleanroom brush line has developed over time to meet the specific needs for the electronics industry as well as industries where static electric buildup or charges are detrimental to the manufacturing process. The ESD line has been expanded to formally include cleanroom applications. The ESD line consists of conductive, static dissipative, anti-static and insulative brushes.

Gordon Brush's static dissipative brushes are made with a special fiber called Thunderon. Our thunderon brushes are made with Thunderon®, a very fine (.0015 diameter) acrylic fiber chemically bonded with copper sulfide. The special fiber will dissipate a charge on an electronically charged surface. The surface resistivity of Thunderon® is 10^-2. The plastic handle is dissipative with a surface resistivity of 10⁵. These brushes are made with 100% Thunderon®, a conductive filament, or a mixture of Thunderon® and Goat Hair.

Thunderon® removes the static charge that makes dirt and particles adhere to work surfaces. It also has good abrasion resistance, does not break easily, and has a strong anti-bacterial performance due to the nature of the surface coating.

Technically, Thunderon® fiber is an acrylic fiber that has been chemically bonded with a layer of copper sulfide. This outer layer becomes a part of the host fiber itself, which precludes the 'flaking' problem experienced by other conductive fibers. The fiber diameter is as fine as .004 cm and its conductive layer is as thin as 300~1,000AÅ. It has electrical specific resistance of 10^-1 - 10^-2 W/cm.

The physical characteristics of Thunderon® are determined by the base fiber's characteristics.

Thunderon® Brushes

Gordon Brush offers a variety of Thunderon® brushes in standard styles and shapes to accommodate your needs. Brush styles range from the SST Series (pencil style handles) to the Aluminum Handle Series (metal toothbrush style) to the Dissipative Brushes. The Dissipative Brushes are made with two standard handle shapes like drafting brushes. Both handle styles are made with black conductive plastic that has a surface resistivity of 10⁵. All brush styles with 100% Thunderon® material are very soft because of the fineness of the fiber. The Dissipative brushes are also available with a mixture of Thunderon® and Goat Hair. The mixture of Thunderon® and Goat Hair, while still quite soft, is stiffer than 100% Thunderon® and is less expensive.
